Makawao is a gorgeous little town overflowing with personality. You’ll find boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and even a few places to get a drink on Baldwin Avenue, set in buildings that look like a picture from the old west. It’s a favorite spot for many upcountry residents thanks to its laid-back atmosphere.
Makawao culture evolved from many influences. Back in Maui’s cattle ranching days, the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) was born, and even today you can find plenty of Western riding and rodeos, which are especially prevalent in the great annual 4th of July parade that takes place here. Authentic Hawaiian culture is strong here, but there is a great deal of new age or hippie influence as well.
Located next to the many commercial conveniences of Pukalani and just below the misty reaches of Olinda, Makawao is the upcountry gateway down to North Shore Paia. The drive to downtown Kahului takes a little over twenty minutes.
Makawao real estate includes extensive home listings and a good deal of land listings. Condo sales are uncommon in this area. There’s a very wide range of real estate both in terms of price range and style, as homes here come in all shapes and sizes. If you want to buy real estate in Upcountry Maui, Makawao is a wonderful blend of convenience and character, which makes it a great place to call home.
